Challenge:
Deliver multi-million dollar diagnostic imaging systems produced by one of the world’s leading medical equipment manufacturers on time and damage free.
Solution:
Development of a specially trained hauling fleet dedicated to handling and delivering the product.
Results:
- Increased speed to market with equipment
- 99.65% on time delivery performance
- Claims frequency of less than 0.2%
Details:
When a hospital or clinic spends several hundred thousand, or even millions of dollars on new medical systems, they expect the equipment to arrive on time, without damage, and be placed in their facility by professionals. Our customer trusts us to be their delivery arm, and we take great pride in striving to exceed their expectations. All deliveries for this customer are on day, on time, with install crews waiting, so on time performance in these high profile situations is crucial. Many of the shipments are expedited, making it our responsibility to react and add additional capacity to our fleet as needed. 28 drivers are assigned to the dedicated fleet for this customer, with many more trained to serve as reinforcements during peak periods. Each driver is equipped with a lift gate trailer to allow deliveries of equipment to medical facilities without shipping docks.
Transportation of Raw Materials to Manufacturing Plants
Challenge:
Consolidate material from suppliers nationwide and ship to our customers’ production facilities while meeting time sensitive requirements.
Solution:
Creation of a system of “milk runs,” in which product is consolidated from multiple vendors at our distribution centers and delivered in bulk weekly to the manufacturing plants.
Results:
- Smoother flow of inbound raw material to plants
- Substantial savings in supply chain and inventory carrying costs
- Significantly reduced cycle times, with most products moved from vendor to manufacturer in 3-4 days
Details:
The milk run program consists of 25 weekly truckloads of product transported from supplier locations nationwide to the customer manufacturing and distribution facilities in the Milwaukee area, as well as three daily trucks that service local and Wisconsin suppliers. The schedule and routing is based on the needs of the manufacturing plants and production capabilities of the suppliers. Supplier pickups are performed by regional distribution center personnel and consolidated for single truckload delivery, or in many cases picked up directly by the truck inbound to Milwaukee. The entire program is managed and coordinated from our Wisconsin office. Among the many benefits of the program are reduced transportation cost, just- in- time delivery to the manufacturing plants, and management of supplier relationships, all of which results in our customer being able to get their product to market quicker than ever before.
Reverse Logistics
Challenge:
Removal and transport of obsolete or out of lease equipment to a renewal facility for a major medical systems supplier.
Solution:
Designed system to allow our drivers to work in concert with field technicians to have old equipment removed from the hospital or clinic as its being reinstalled.
Results:
- Fewer interruptions for hospital or clinic staff
- Increased productivity for field technicians
- Trained professional personnel handling equipment removal
Details:
In most cases, when a hospital or clinic purchases a new medical system, they are replacing a unit they currently have in their facility. In order to prepare for a new system, the existing unit must be de-installed and removed from the premises prior to delivery of the new unit. Our drivers meet the de-installation technicians on site and work with them to remove the old units as it is taken apart. This approach minimizes disruption to patients and staff within the hospital or clinic. After removing the old units from the facility, the driver transports them to the designated recycling facility, where they are either scrapped or designated for refurbishment.
